Welcome to Ontonagon County

Ontonagon County on the south shore of Lake Superior includes the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park created in 1945.  It has 60,000 acres of virgin forest; Lake of the Clouds, one of the most  scenic spots in all of Michigan; and Summit Peak Observation Tower, one of the highest points in Michigan. It offers an expansive view of thousands of acres of virgin forest and on a clear day, over Lake Superior's vast expanse, one can see the far off Apostle Islands to the west. There are miles of sandy beaches at Union Bay for swimming and agate hunting. For history buffs, there are self-guided trails to old mining sites on the Union Mine Scenic Trail, and the Nonesuch Mine location.

Ontonagon County has over 1,200 miles of streams and rivers. Canoeing on the mighty Ontonagon River or viewing the many waterfalls are a tourist's delight. Bond Falls has been the back drop for national ad campaigns and is handicap accessible. Agate Falls is also handicap accessible and is one of the highest in the Midwest. O-Kun-de-Cun Falls (named after the great Ojibway Chieftain in the area) provides a great photographic opportunity with a suspension bridge over the Baltimore River below the falls.
