Welcome to Alger County
| Munising - Alger County's largest town - is nestled between Lake
Superior and rolling wooded hills; scenic Grand Island lies just off shore in
the bay. Long a destination for tourists, the community's most prominent
attraction is the beautiful Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. These
colorful and majestic rock formations may be viewed by cruise boat or air tours.
Hiking trails through the lakeshore span 42.8 miles between Munising on the west
and Grand Marais on the east.
Some rock formations and waterfalls require only short walks
to enjoy; others take longer, more challenging hikes. An Underwater
Preserve - something like a shipwreck museum below the surface of the lake -
includes about a dozen dive sites. Non-divers can view these relics of
maritime history from the glass viewing deck of a tour boat.
Miles of routes for hiking, canoeing, kayak trips, Camping,
mountain biking as well as lookouts over Lake Superior and open water boating
can be accessed with the help of outfitters offering equipment rentals.
