Alpena County is most certainly a
resort area, with excellent accommodations on the pristine waters of Lake Huron
and the Thunder Bay River. Many shipwrecks (80) lie on the bottom of Thunder Bay
Underwater Preserve, needless to say a popular scuba diving area. Fishing at the
Fletcher Floodwaters is also a popular sport.A unique
feature of the land includes 150ft. wide sink holes, a geological wonder which
occur at very few places in the world. Stone and copper tools dating back to
1500 B.C. have also been found in the area. Small burial mounds are located on
the banks of the Devil and Thunder Bay Rivers.
